Hydrometers are also used for maintenance of wet-cell nickel-cadmium batteries to ensure the electrolyte is of the proper strength for the application; for this battery chemistry the specific gravity of the electrolyte is not related to the state of charge of the battery. If the specific gravity measures between 1.100 and 1.220, the battery must be recharged. Be sure that no water is in the straw to throw off the calibration. To obtain this reading, first use a beer thief to retrieve a sample of the wort and transfer it to a testing jar or cylinder. Hydrometers measure specific gravity. Green Dot is visible: the battery is sufficiently charged for further testing (Heavy Load Test).
